Thank you for contacting my office regarding Assembly Bill 475, the Jacki Rickert Medical Marijuana Act.
I empathize with patients who suffer great pain during their battles with cancer. While I know medical marijuana is used as a form of pain relief in other states, I do not feel it should be offered in Wisconsin. I am concerned with the unintended effects of legalizing medical marijuana when used in the smoking form, especially when there are alternative forms of pain relief available which are safer and more effective.
There are already legal medications that use synthetic THC, the active ingredient found to relieve symptoms of chemotherapy. Additionally, the FDA has yet to approve any medications to be administered in smoking form as it is difficult to administer safe, regulated dosages.
I will, however, be sure to keep your position in mind as these types of issues make their way through the legislative process. Please continue to contact my office with your comments, concerns and questions.
